The invitation

What research can't tell you.

You've read the articles and watched the videos. What research can't tell you is how your body feels on a normal Tuesday in a place that isn't yours. Phuket is easy to love for a week. That's exactly why a vacation can't tell you whether you could live here. This week is built around that question, and it still leaves room for Loy Krathong, a day on Phang Nga Bay, good food and rest.

This is for you if…

  • You're curious about living abroad, whether you're planning a move or still dreaming about one
  • Thailand is on your shortlist, or you want to find out if it belongs there
  • You want to explore with other Black, Brown and queer people who understand why belonging matters
  • You'd rather test a place in person than move on a guess

It's not for you if…

  • You want a party trip and nothing else
  • You need someone to guarantee you a visa, a job or an apartment
  • You've already decided and just need movers

You don't need to arrive certain. The point is to leave clearer.

This retreat is designed for Black, Brown and queer people, and those who want to explore alongside them. We expect respect, and we keep what people share in group conversations private.

Your hosts

Cam & K Redd

We left the U.S. in 2025. Since then we've lived in Spain, Colombia, Peru and Argentina. We started in Spain, then chose Medellín. We write Sovereign Sundays for people asking how to build a borderless life.

Cam and K Redd, smiling together at an event

Cam Redd

Founder · Sovereign Sundays

Cam spent years designing training programs and onboarding for government, corporate and military teams. This week uses that same skill: a clear structure, real practice, and time to reflect.

K Redd

Certified peer specialist · The Uncomfortable Truth

K Redd has spent years supporting people through hard transitions. Moving abroad has hard parts too: homesickness, loneliness, money stress. She makes space for those conversations, so the emotional side of the move gets as much care as the practical side. This is peer support, not therapy.

We left the U.S. with 4 suitcases and a dream. Here's where they've been.

During the retreat

We land in Phuket about ten days before you do to walk every neighborhood, eat at every restaurant and ride every route.

  • We're with the group for every planned activity
  • You can reach us 24/7 during the retreat
  • We work with a licensed Thai tour operator, local guides and invited guests who live in Phuket
  • One-on-one time with Cam or K Redd before you fly home
  • What people share in group conversations stays private
  • Room for the emotional side of the move, with K Redd's peer support

Why Phuket

Island life, with real systems behind it.

Phuket is more than a postcard. It has strong private hospitals, international schools and a large community of people from all over the world who live here year-round. In January 2025, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. We stay at the quiet south end, near Rawai and Nai Harn, where many long-term residents settle.

2025Same-sex marriage recognized, first in Southeast Asia
$355–590A one-bedroom near Rawai, a month
$2Thai chicken and rice from a street stall
$12A day pass at a coworking café

Prices researched October 2026 for our Phuket brochure. We recheck every one on our scouting trip. Prices move with the exchange rate.

What to weigh

  • Island life costs more.A comfortable life here runs about $1,900 to $3,700 a month, more than most of Thailand. You're paying for the beach. On Tuesday, you'll price it yourself.
  • Colorism exists in Thailand.Lighter skin is often treated as a status marker. Some Black visitors feel it right away, and some barely notice. This week lets you find out for yourself, with people who get it.
  • Some things are easier to find in Bangkok.Black hair care, dermatologists who know darker skin and English-speaking mental health care. Bangkok is a short flight away, and we'll help you plan how you'd get what you need.
  • You'll want wheels. Many places are easiest to reach by car or scooter, and the roads take care.

You may leave with a yes, or a no. Both are good outcomes. A sovereign decision can be yes, no or not yet.

Questions

What people ask.

Something else on your mind? Ask on a 15-minute call, or write to .

Why not just plan the trip myself?

You could. A solo week usually misses what this one is built around: a local guide through the neighborhoods where people actually live, dinner with people who already moved, a budget built from your own receipts, and two Planner sessions to turn it all into a plan.

Can I come alone?

Yes. Most people do.

Do I need to speak Thai?

No. Activities are hosted in English. You'll notice where Thai would help, and that's useful information too.

What if I'm not ready to move yet?

That's who this is for. Some guests are planning a move. Others are just curious. "Not yet" is a real answer.

Can I bring a partner?

Yes. Book the shared room, and you can request one king bed.

Is Phuket safe?

For most visitors, most of the time, yes. The biggest everyday risk is the roads. We handle group transport, and we'll talk honestly about scooters, taxis and common tourist scams.

What can't you promise?

This is a chance to explore. It doesn't guarantee a visa, a job, housing or a successful move. The routes presentation is educational, not legal advice.

What happens after I request the brochure?

It lands in your inbox right away, followed by a few short emails about the week. When you're ready, book a 15-minute Google Meet call with Cam. If it's a good fit, you'll get a private link to reserve your spot.

Your next step

See whether Phuket could become home.

From $5,250 for a private room, or $3,975 each when you share, through January 31, 2027.
